Building on the WordPress theme developed for Innovative Publishing Company LLC (IPC) properties, I relaunched FoodSafetyTech as a WordPress site in August 2015.
The challenges were quite similar to those of MedTechIntelligence: transform essentially a single list of published articles, and rarely used site features to an intuitive reading experience, collecting articles by topic areas, and quickly distinguishing News, Features, and Opinion Columns. With input from the other virtual team members, the new site architecture was built using WordPress as it’s base, utilizing both off-the-shelf, open-source plugins as well as plugins and widgets I built specifically for the project. With the assistance of a more advanced developer, for some of the more complex programming required, the launch of the new FoodSafetyTech.com was in August 2015.
A particular focus for each of the new IPC sites was on search engine optimization (SEO), leveraging the backlist of published and indexed articles, while improving the sites appearance in search results. Key to this was an initial concentration on on-page tactics, followed by off-page work; getting our ducks in a row, then sending them off as it were. In mid 2016, FoodSafetyTech articles were accepted as a Google News source, and the Advanced Mobile Page (AMP) versions of the articles are now delivered as part of that service within an hour of being published.
A completely redesigned email newsletter template capped off the redevelopment process, matching the look and feel of the new FoodSafetyTech product, providing readers with a quick summary of recent articles published on the site.
With the successful launch of MedTechIntelligence and FoodSafetyTech, we moved on to developing IPC’s third publishing venture, CannabisIndustryJournal.
